Road in draughting education South Africa

As a  passionate advocate of the concept of multi disciplinary technical draughting, design and multi operational CAD driver package skill sets. Teaching technical drawing skills is imperitive for several important engineering careers. Not just understanding drawings but compiling technical drawings to be built from.

School level education should be creating employable young people for the world of work as soon as complete. After 12 years of schooling we should really have a basic workforce ready to be employed. To my mind the school system at present is not creating an employable end product after 12 years of school. The students still need much additional education to become remotely valuable for the world of work and industry.

I was having a conversation with a school principle awhile ago, at one of the many education seminars i attend. I asked him why practical subjects like wood work, technical drawing, metal work, home economics and various other hands on courses had been completely dropped from the main stream SA school curriculum after 1994. His response really confounded me - I'm not sure if it is correct, however it could be and it is a fact that these practical important subjects have been completely dropped. He said - they dropped subjects across the countries public schools based on if all schools could afford the equipment. If the potentail for theft was rife at 1 school then no schools should have the privilege of carrying that subject. If the subject created difficulties in socio economically challenged schools then it was dropped! - According to him, all schools must be equal in disseminating information. Although this is noble, it is a very interesting approach and could explain why these valuable subjects have been completely dropped. (FACT)

Education for all, however limited education for all if all schools are not equal in handling the subject in equal measure and the same manner. Then all schools default to the lowest common denominator. This according to him was suggested by a highly esteemed education minister who was the architect of this approach shortly after 1994. Now i dont know if this is true, however i do know these practical subjects have been dropped.

As an executive member of the SAID for close to 10 years now and having represented SAID at various SACAP forums. Ive had the privilege to sit between education, industry, voluntary associations and regulatory bodies for a number of years now. Running my own architectural practice has added additional insight into my chosen profession.

These are 4 very important pillars or domains and role players in the world of work arena. My own interpretation of Draughting is the ability to clearly communicate using technical drawings illustrations to graphic design and even some conceptual artists renderings are interpreted as draughting. (Escher)

Having the privilege to lecture  multi disciplinary draughting / design since 1994 at various draughting / cad schools. Starting at the cad training center in 1994, academy of advanced technology, academy of draughting,  intec, damlin, northlink college and currently at the academy of inventive design and technology in century city. The further priviledge of  currently being assigned the position of examiner and chief examiner for the department of education - south africa - creating isat's and exemplar papers for the NCV - architectural graphics and technology NQF level 1 and 2. This all sounds very bla bla bla toot toot fishpaste. However my point is im very close to training this multidisciplinary draughting skill set and subject.

i am always amazed at the incredible talent coming up through the educational system. Talent that does not always hit its straps within this benchmarking first 12 year arena. Late talented bloomers find it difficult in a world that measures one on school performance  -  unfortunately an arena that doesn't always correctly work with out the box thinkers.

So having spent many years in the after school teaching domain - I am now going to try and expose younger minds to the concepts of out the box thinking - With my little character Yip Trip. if one can spark and nurture talent before and whilst it goes through the 12 year school system. We can hopefully shield young sensitive creative minds and expose them to the concept of the creative mind within. An exciting prospect which welds tuition, industry expertise and designs around young creative futuristic design draughting mindsets.

So Yip Trip with his friend Thandile, dog Gidgit , sister Yippi Mippi and a host of other characters - will start designing whacky furniture, houses , office blocks and improving life in their home town Grebnezium (Muizenberg backwards.) The concept behind the character is to encourage out the box thinking before and during the formative 12 school years.

Most pictures for the story are compiled in technical cad packages (as i couldn't hope to compete with today's graphic artists) The ability to create graphic pictures using CAD packages is a different approach and should yield drawings that are interestingly different whilst giving off the idea that its not necessarily the medium you chose to use to communicate pictorial ideas - but the actual idea itself. Huh??!!

As one gets older all of ones experiences converge and if one is fortunate and if you live long enough you can draw from these experiences. You can then disseminate these  individual experiences. You will make it much faster for those behind you to elevate themselves into the world of work if you communicate your journey. We cannot possibly go more wrong than we currently are in this 12 year first phase teaching process. At this point training youngsters just to fly before they learn to land, will mean they have to stay airborne for longer. Huh???!! Pilots that cant land!!! "Perposterous" i hear say. Off with his measly little head.

Mesembryanthemaceae inspired architecture - wildetecture

QJD design studio and Wildetecture has long been architecturally inspired by plants - One such plant the mesembryanthemaceae is of particular interest to those who are inspired by organic forms -  Having sketched a few examples of buildings and used this plant as a point of design aesthetic departure - The end product from this exercise is an interesting fusion of wild visual concepts - Our Wildetecture ideals coming across the strongest.

Having just returned from a sojourn into the transkei i am very excited to experiment with several key designs which i would like to take forward. Welding inspiration for a multi leveled building from level 1 shells and whales level 2 local shipwrecks through the recorded ages, level 3 fynbos / local trees. level 4 cape fold mountains level 5 sky, birds, cloud and mist. but this building and community ensemble will have to wait a little while longer unfortunately - Im not really ready to take on this design assignment just as yet. I feel o need more time to understand the levels of each.

It has long been a desire  to take a break for a few days and go into the desert, on my own, just the big expanse of the sky and a receptive mind harvesting ideas. the weight and silence of the Kalahari, Namib or Karoo seemingly  receptive to the ions of timeless ideas floating around this silent space. To start a design school within this space and practice the concept of thinking out loud with a few like minded folk - Would be a great way to whittle away time i think and get inspired. Who knows what will be?

QJD design studio - passionate about designing homes

QJD design studio has designed over 80 new homes and 300 alterations to existing homes. Our clients have ranged from a british lord to artists to families in Cape Towns informal settlements. We derive influence from several architectural styles , creating unique homes using influence from a wide and varied spectrum.
We have also contracted our services to several cape town architects - being the principle draughting practice for the first Cape Quarter development and Willowbridge center. Offering a full range of services from concept design drawings to working drawings and schedules.

We have designed homes overseas and all around South Africa. Designing homes in most of Cape Towns southern suburb estates. Baviaanskloof estate, Hillcrest estate, Stonehaven estate, Klein slangkop estate, Blue water estate to mention a few.

We are a design studio with design concepts across the board however our principle discipline is architectural design. We design furniture and dabble in several other disciplines from graphic design to sculpture. As design principles can be successfully applied to all creative disciplines.

We have just launched Erxell design and marketing as our sister practice. We want to be able to offer an additional creative design portfolio with a huge difference.

Our next venture is to create South Africas first crop circle inspired home deep in the Karoo. Incorporating principles from earth branded architecture, perceived kinetic architecture , disintegration of perspective, architectural shadow projection. To the first ever sculptured truss design. It has been inspired by the distant track of our ancestors past to our present future techno perfect.

Our very dark green ambition is to collectively create a system that's by products are pure water and oxygen.

impossible?? -

If we werent distracted by petty war, i think people are close to inventing this as reality.

Fish bone table set - wildetecture style

The wildetecture dining room table fish bone table and chair set. An artistic sculptural art piece. Where you sit and enjoy beautiful food and scintillating conversations of adventures on far distant horizons. Sail away to wild imaginings and artistic destinations. Thats worth getting excited about.

Madusa virus throne chair

After cape towns last massive winter storm i went on my customary beach combing walk along Muizenberg beach to Cemetery. The storm and the surging tide had pushed a huge amount of debris up onto the beach. Exciting stuff. My robinson crusoe, swiss family robinson adventure starts.- I could hardly contain myself - I say debris as it was definitely not the usual organic material I'm accustomed to sifting through - shells, driftwood, sea spoils. My sifting through process is peek cap just above the eyes to limit the overall spectrum of vision - so i can concentrate on a manageable area of view space. And i walk not to quickly but not to slowly. The area i walk on the beach is very isolated and has become a hotspot for mugging thugs. This has benefits as its not often traversed by fellow combers. The muggers have scared them off. However even the pick handle axe i carry is no match for these persistent zombie scavengers of all that is honorable and good. But fervent madness and crazy walk confidence confuses the zomby. They not sure if you a hunter or prey. I like to think my dad bod older dude look is abit duideluk.

The beach washed up debris on this day was different and bearing in mind i only actually ended up walking 1km and in that 1km i found - 22 slip slops - none matching - 30 light bulbs - munged up wetsuits - about 100 unused condoms still in their rappers - So I'm thinking theirs a crazy cult of people sacrificing wrapped condoms in the sea to prevent pregnancy, not far fetched where i live, common sense left the building along time ago. I kid you not -i found tekkies, tons of plastic rubbish , nothing to constitute the organic shell treasure I'm used to finding. So i decided to sculpt a virus madusa throne chair an ode to man and his crap in the dunes. It was a throne to all the human made crap that washed up during the storm. I had great fun dragging all the junk to my centralized location and sculpting the virus madusa throne chair. Took me a good 5 hours to sculpt this throne to man the king of the beach defiler. An ode to man the destroyer of worlds using affluence from his own forges. As humans we can collectively sit on this madusa chair and marvel at our incredibly amazing wasteful ingenuity. We cut off one polluting element and 10 greedily start to grow in its place. As a virus, which we very much are, we sure accomplish our destructive task exceedingly well - I took a photo of my VMTC but a drawing was easier to depict. The photo lost the drama. I brought in seaweed elements to exaggerate the wild organic nature effect. My drawing does not actually show the real amount of trash i used to sculpt this ode to mans idiocracy. I was subliminary still trying to make my creation look pretty into the early evening - not a good idea to be on that far part of the beach at that time - zombie mugger hour i am legend. But even muggiing thugs know crazy when they see it. I had the ferver of a mad monk. Aint nobody gonna mug a mad monk.

I harvest old slip slops found on the beach when i go surfing. The surf spot, muizenberg corner,  is about 3km from my house along the beach. I dont like surfing in front of my complex, rip currents and sharks. I generally go down either in just my baggies or my wetsuit. i don't take anything because the pirate zombie mugging thug brigade steal everything. So the harvested mismatched slip slops keep my feet protected and have absolutely no value. I don't care if they get stolen, infact its a result if they do get stolen, as it adds to the recyclable nature of the beach combing process. Plus a mugging thug pirate wearing my harvested mismatched slip slops whilst commandeering a theft heist. Now that's pretty cool really. Stolen valor i tell you.  Put that mugging theft character on the Madusa virus throne, thrown on infact  - with a 50 made up condom crown - he can be king of the mugging pirates for the day. Oh that will be so crackalacking. Chuckling i walked home in the dark as my sculpture began to blow away in the wind. A single slip slop marks the spot now. Sadly i never put a zombie mugger in place on the throne. But my imaginative kings new clothes ceremony was quite enough.

stark raven mad

A latest sculpture - an ode to minions of a deceased architectural designer.
Maybe going into the new century we need a fresh outlook to our architectural future. The crow raven blinkered perspective sculpture.
